Vanity Call Signs FAQ : How can I get a 1-by-2 or 2-by-1 (Group A - Extra Class) call sign?

About 1-by-2 and 2-by-1 Vanity call signs:

The availability of 1-by-2 and 2x1 call signs
(that is a K, N or W followed by a numeral and two letters) are very limited ...and in the case of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th call areas, totally unavailable except for those to expire beyond the 2 year grace period. At the present time, a few (VERY few) K-by-2 call signs are available in the 1st, 8th and 9th call areas. N-by-2 call signs are available in the zero, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th and 9th call areas. There are NO 1-by-2 call signs available that begin with a W in any call sign area. And as soon as one becomes available, many people apply for it, so there will always be competition for those call signs.

2-by-1 call signs
(
AA-AK, KA-KZ, WA-WZ and NA-NZ by one letter) are available in all areas except the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th call sign areas. The list of available 1-by-2 and 2-by-1 call signs changes quickly so it is not possible to list the call signs that are available at any given time.
Remember that you do NOT have to select a call sign from your present call sign area. Vanity call signs may be selected from ANY radio district area (zero through nine.)

Be also aware that 2-by-1 call signs beginning with the letters AH, KH, NH, WH, WL, AL, KL, NL, KP, NP and WP are not available to radio amateurs with mailing addresses in the contiguous (lower 48 continental) United States. These prefixes are geographically restricted to amateurs in the Pacific (for example: Hawaii), Alaska and Atlantic (for example: Puerto Rico) areas.

If it is important for you to have a 1x2 or 2x1 call signs beginning with K, N or W, list your order of preference by entering this information in the text box at the bottom of the form and we will try to accommodate. (A 4 character call sign beginning with the letter N is the easiest to get; K and W 1-by-2 call signs are VERY DIFFICULT to obtain.)
